Often people like to know these kinds of things Ive compiled a list if them together from various sources. It should help in any decisions… for OC boards and what not.
However to be honest there are many reasons to have good power delivery. I for one wish these were more public. Its a darn shame that people who work for the manufacturers or even the hacks who O.
C do not share this information and when you ask most do not share as if its some kind of secret. Perhaps it is and I am not in the know but here are all the ones I know and Im sharing it with all… I appreciate the crowdsourcing of errors and confirming the unknown or blank spots….
Let us start with the better quality boards and companies and go in descending order. I am determining quality based on the last years of QA, the quality of UEFI, the quality of UEFI updates and supporting new chips, and the quality of the features and power delivery onboard.
Right before we start I will list the power stages companies and what the model numbers say. Next up we have gigabyte. Now we have ASUS. Great EFI not the best quality control as of late. A lot of features most of which you do not need and well they are damn sexy boards I will give them that.
Finally we have MSI. While some boards are good others are hit or miss. Particularly their mid tier. Nobody expects the low tier boards to perform anyways but the mid tier that slots into budget points the QA has been horrible for years.
Quite frankly they have repeatedly tried to work on it but they are still havent figure it out.So what is a VRM? A VRM is essentially a tricked-out buck converter and operates under the same working principle. However, VRMs for high performance computers, especially overclocked gaming computers, tend to use components that are typically not found in a standard voltage regulator circuit or IC.
A VRM converts the 12 V output from a computer power supply to a lower voltage ranging anywhere from 1. This switching regulator is implemented as a buck converter and has a rather simple layout, although a VRM uses different components than a typical switching regulator.
The output voltage and current can then be set by choosing the appropriate duty cycle and frequency. The electronics in a CPU already run at low DC voltage, but they also have razor thin noise margins compared to ICs that run at higher voltage. The very low noise margins require highly stable voltage regulation. The components used in a VRM provide more precise and stable voltage regulation than a typical buck converter. The circuit diagram for a typical single-stage VRM is shown below. The low-side MOSFET and the inductor provide feedback for regulation, and the voltage seen by the processor is stabilized by the capacitor.
Circuit diagrams for single-stage and multistage VRMs. Modern computers use a multistage VRM, typically with 3 or more phases. This causes the stages to switch in sequence. The benefit of using multiple stages is that heat generated in the MOSFETs is spread out over a larger area, although this increases the cost per board.
However, this is an important aspect of modern high performance computing as thermal regulation can be a major problem in GPUs, especially with overclocked processors. This should illustrate the other benefit of using a multistage VRM: the output voltage is essentially a damped transient response, and the transient voltage will have less time to drop off when switching occurs more often.
Note that the minimum duty cycle is just the switching frequency multiplied by the minimum on-time for the PWM signal. This causes any droop in the output voltage to be less than that seen in a single stage VRM or a typical switching regulator that uses a longer duty cycle with a given time constant.
